Daily Photo: Shearing at Stoer 3
Part of the Daily Photo series of photos taken and curated by Jeni Reid especially for WOVEMBER, this photo is one of a series that documents HARVESTING WOOL for this phase of WOVEMBER.
My partner and I house-sit for a friend who lives in the far north of the Scottish mainland. Clare lives in Assynt, in one of a tiny collection of houses by the sea. It is croft land and the sheep, mostly Cheviots, roam free much to the consternation of visiting tourists who find them lying nonchalantly in the middle of the single track roads. This summer we were just in time to watch some of the crofters as they sheared their flocks and they were good enough to let me take some photographs, and a fleece!
The crofter, a young assistant and the hand-shearer. It was a wet spring this year and many of the ewes had tatty fleeces which needed the skills of the hand-shearer.
